Structure & Content

The MBA curriculum is comprised of ten compulsory and ten elective subjects, making a total of twenty subjects for the degree. Full-time students have the option of completing the program in either sixteen or twenty months. The School accepts new students into the full-time MBA in January and September each year. The full-time MBA program is intense, with three, thirteen week terms in the year (12 teaching weeks + 1 exam week) and continuous assessment across the program. In total, students are required to complete over 750 class hours, making ours an MBA of global standard. An optional element of the full-time MBA is the International Exchange Program . Approximately 30 per cent of our full-time class elect to spend their third term at a leading international exchange school. These students complete 5 elective subjects while on exchange and these subjects are credited back to their Melbourne MBA.

The MBA curriculum is comprised of 10 compulsory and 10 elective subjects, making a total of twenty subjects for the degree. The Melbourne Business School MBA takes three years to complete on a part-time basis. Our academic calendar comprises three 13 week terms each year, with each term being made up of 12 weeks of teaching and a final examination week. The School accepts new students into the part-time MBA in January, May and September each year. The average part-time study load is two subjects a term, however, the School recognises the demands that work and personal life place on part-time students. This means that students may elect to take a lighter study load (of one subject) in a particular term or may wish to take a term away from study. Similarly, part-time students may increase their study load at any time providing there are suitable extra subjects being taught in a particular term. In addition, students may complete the program more quickly, by transferring to the full-time program. Our part-time MBA program has been designed to promote career development and help students build personal and leadership skills. Our students aspire to increased management responsibility, are serious about their careers and expect tangible returns on their investment: increased options, wider job scope and responsibilities and a set of skills that will equip them for successful and sustained careers.

Admission Requirements

For entry into the part-time Melbourne MBA Program candidates must have:

completed a three or four year undergraduate degree at a recognized tertiary institution. The program does not require candidates to have studied commerce or business at undergraduate level. Professional qualifications are not an adequate substitute for an undergraduate degree.
a minimum of two years full-time post-graduation work experience. This experience need not have been at managerial level but must have been completed as at least two consecutive years of full-time employment.
a Graduate Management Admissions Test (GMAT) score. The School will not waive the GMAT requirement in any circumstance.
a good command of English. If undergraduate study was not in English, students are required to submit an IELTS score, with a minimum requirement of 6.5 or TOEFL score with a minimum requirement of 610.

Structure & Content

EMBA students will complete four fully residential modules of four weeks’ duration, over a 14 month period. Participants return to their workplaces and apply their learning during the 3-4 month interval between modules. The program is intensive. Faculty contact is up to 40 hours per week, with at least a further 30 hours of private study, preparation and group work. The learning methods are diverse, ranging from interactive class discussions, case studies and group problem solving, to experiential activities and formal presentations. Current management concepts and associated business thinking are covered in an applied context. A significant proportion of the program is undertaken in small syndicate groups, further enhancing the dynamic learning experience. In order to promote additional learning within the group, a cooperative learning culture is encouraged. Each module and study is assessed through a combination of individual and group assignments, open book examinations, contribution to class discussion and presentations. Each module is graded on a pass/fail basis to encourage maximum collaboration and learning between and amongst individuals and syndicates. All assessment takes placed during each module. The final day of each module is the final day of formal study and assessment until the next module begins. Melbourne modules take place at MBS’ fully residential facility in Carlton, Melbourne. The international module is conducted in USA, Europe & China.

Admission Requirements

Approximately 40 people are selected for the EMBA program each intake. There are two intakes per year with the program commencing in May and October. A number of participants are from outside Australia.

The program is for experienced business executives who already have the qualifications, skills and experience commensurate with the challenges of the course.

Successful applicants are likely to possess:

an undergraduate degree
a minimum of 10 years full-time work experience, including significant experience at a managerial level
a demonstrable record of professional achievement
a Graduate Management Admissions Test may be required (GMAT is the worldwide standard in aptitude assessment for admission to postgraduate management programs

To apply for a place in the program applicants will need to complete the application form indicating:

An undergraduate degree (in any discipline). Applicants should provide evidence of this degree in the form of fully certified academic transcripts. A copy of a degree certificate is not sufficient.
Your resume or curriculum vitae indicating a minimum of ten years full time work experience normally gained after graduating from an undergraduate degree. This experience can be in any organisation or industry, but your track record should show continuous professional progression or development.
The names and contact details (phone and email) of two referees. (Do not include open references).
Considered responses to questions about yourself and your goals in support of your application.
Proof of citizenship (certified copy of passport or birth certificate.
Original or certified copy of GMAT results if requested.
A face-to-face interview.
