Online job search: let the hunt begin!

Those were the days: MBA students did an internship and returned to campus for their second year with a neat full-time job in their pocket. Those days are definitely over. Numbers of recruiters who are visiting business schools have dropped significantly. And those who still come have less jobs on offer. Business schools are starting new partnership – on the internet, where else?

Doostang is one of the highly popular websites business schools are seeking cooperations with: When Wharton School joined Doostang, it didn’t take long until schools like Darden School of Business oder Cornell's Johnson Graduate School of Management followed. The social network founded by a Stanford MBA Alumni has now become the first point of contact for job hunting MBA graduates in the US. The advantages for students are obvious: They can access job offers as well as an extended network of recruiters.

However, things are changing in Europe as well: Insead started a cooperation with Doostang in early May. "We have an in-house job board with about 2,000 opportunities, but giving students access to thousands more jobs is a plus, especially in this difficult job market," says Sandra Schwarzer, director of career services at INSEAD to BusinessWeek.

Access to the US job market is not unimportant for European schools with a high share of US-American students like Insead. It is much more difficult for them to build a similar network like their fellow students, who have enroled in American degrees. "The feedback has been extremely positive," she says. "People are getting calls for job interviews both in the U.S. and outside. Given the positive return, I would expect the partnership to continue."

IvyexecIvy Exec is another player in the MBA job market. The web-based recruitment company offers more than 3.600 jobs including highly paid positions like vice-president of finance and associate at a financial advisory firm.

This makes Ivy Exec an interesting partner for schools like Duke University’s Fuqua Business School, whose recruitment numbers have dropped drastically since the economic crisis. Students from Duke and Fuqua alike are now receiving a premium membership for Ivy Exec. Similar deals have been cut with London Business School and Stern School of Business.
While MBA graduates together with their business schools are pulling out all the stops to gain ground on the current job market, online job services are cheering over high calibre partners and record clicks. Every crisis has its winners.
