EMBA-Global Asia: Inaugural Class Enjoys Strong Support

The inaugural class of the “EMBA-Global Asia” beginning of May marks the Asian expansion of EMBA-Global - the top-ranked executive MBA partnership programme offered by Columbia Business School and London Business School. The new course became possible when the New York and London faculties embraced Hong Kong University’s Business School as their Asian partner.

EMBA-Global Asia is the first programme to offer learning and networking opportunities across three cities that drive global business: Hong Kong, New York and London. EMBA-Global Asia is an intensive, 20-month programme. On completion, students will receive a joint MBA degree awarded by Columbia University, London Business School and The University of Hong Kong.

Studies are undertaken over several consecutive days per month in one of the learning hubs: Hong Kong, London and New York. Students may also study in one or more alternate markets as part of their International seminars or assignments. Each of the three schools makes an equal contribution to the teaching of core courses, with the faculty travelling to teach wherever the class is in residence. Participants have access to the elective portfolios of London, Columbia and HKU Business Schools. Fees for the inaugural intake of the EMBA-Global Asia are US$120,000.

The first class has attracted a diverse cohort of students from around the world. 30 Students are selected from a variety of geographic locations and nationalities, including Canada, China , France , Korea , Malaysia , Netherlands , Philippines , Spain , Taiwan , UK and the USA . They work in a diverse range of industry sectors, including finance, business services, construction, consulting, environmental services, IT, tourism and utilities. Whilst the majority of students today work in the Asia Pacific region, some travel from the Americas and Europe to attend class.

Their expectations are high. Pierre-Abel Maillard, born in France, working as risk manager at Perpetual Limited in Australia, explains why he decided to participate: “The alliance of Columbia Business School , the London Business School and The University of Hong Kong will bring credibility to my past international experience in financial services.” Matthew Pine, born in America, working as operations manager in logistics at Ma Wan Park Limited in Hong Kong wants to maximize his “capacity to manage and lead by utilizing academically learned knowledge to shape and inform my daily decision making.” Paul Beresford, born in Great Britain, currently employed as Director at Canara HSBC Life Insurance in India expects the links to the alumni of the three schools will be “the basis of an outstanding international network of contacts that could be invaluable in making the most of future developments in the financial services environment.”

Despite the economic downturn, employers are supportive of the EMBA-Global Asia programme. Approximately 30 percent of the candidates will receive full or partial financial sponsorship from their employers. Over 60 percent of the students have already obtained advanced degrees and believe that this is the perfect time to prepare for future opportunities as economic conditions improve.
